Begynder guide til tracking med dl-fldigi

Dette er en kort guide til modtagelse af live tracking data fra en ballon der sender GPS data. Guiden dækker alt fra opsætning af radio, computer og det program der sender tracking data til en central server

Komponenter

  • Radio Modtager - skal kunne modtage mellem 430MHz og 440MHz (også kendt som 70cm båndet (fordi bølgelængden er 70cm)) og kunne modtage SSB (single side band), det er vigtigt at bemærke at dette ikke er FM, mange radioer modtager kun FM så kig efter SSB (kan være beskrevet som USB og LSB). Eksempler på radioer der bliver brugt af UKHAS medlemmer inkludere:
    • Yaesu FT-790R - gammel men fantastisk, kan sommetider findes på ebay til omkring 850 kr
    • Yaesu FT-817(ND) - måske ikke favoritten, stort frekvensområde og tranportabel pga. batteri. koster ca. 3400 kr
    • Icom IC-7000 - Kan stort set det hele og lidt til. koster ca. 7650 kr.
    • AOR AOR8000 - Bredbånd modtager (kan ikke sende)
    • Yupiteru MVT-7100 - WideBredbånd modtager (kan ikke sende)
    • Kenwood TS-2000 - kan det samme som IC-7000 men er ældre og lidt billigere.
    • Kenwood TH-F7E - Håndholdt dual radio med en ekstra wideband multimode modtager. Ikke nær så følsom som de andre modtagere men meget bærbar (men kan overvåge den lokale repeater på samme tid)
  • SDR Dongle - Hvis du ikke har lyst til at investere i en dyr modtager, er det også muligt at bruge en USB DVB-T dongle, basseret på Realtek RTL2832U, som en billig tracker. Dette er en fantastisk måde at komme igang med HAB og hjælpe med at tracke andres balonner.
  • FUNcube Dongle Pro+ - En alternativ SDR modtager. Mere følsom end de billige SDR dongles, men koster mere (ca 900 kr). Følsomheden er som på de ovennævnte modtagere.
  • Radio Antenna til 70cm - En udemærket video til forståelse af retningsbestemt antenner findes her Youtube video lavet af Diana Eng, Make Magazine - selvom det er til at sende med gør det samme gældende for modtagelse!
    • Pisk antenne (ofte inkluderet med modtager) er en omni direktionel antenne og er god når balonnen er meget tæt på, men vil også opfange andre signaler og støj.
    • Yagi - er en retnings bestemt antenne, er det bedste når det er svage signaler. (eller til lokalisering hvis GPS modulet ikke virker men senderen gør) Simpelt og tranportbel design af Yagi antenne Yagi Design Lommeregner
    • Moxon - en 2 elements retningsbestemt antenna, kan laves ud af 2 tøj bøjler, overraskende god set i forhold til konstruktionens nemhed (typical example)
  • Computer med lydkort der køre Windows, Mac OS X or Linux
  • Kabel til at forbinde radio og computer - normalt et 3.5mm jack til 3.5mm jack (helst mono , men du kan også være heldig med stereo kabler. Hvis du befinder dig i UK Cabling4Less og Lindy har begge et godt udvalg af stereo kabler eller Maplin har 1.5 og 3.0m mono kabler.)
  • Internet forbindelse, alt fra en fast forbindelse til mobil bredbånd kan bruges
  • Programmer
    • dl-fldigi - En tilpasset ver. af fldigi, dette afkoder den “lyd” computeren modtager fra radioen, den sender så bagefter GPS data over internettet til vores server og viser pos. på et kort.

Baggrund

Hvordan virker det hele? Vi bruger modtager, lydkort og pc til at udføre SDR Software Defined Radio.

Dette bruger computeren til at udføre alt det tunge arbejde, modsat den traditonelle måde som kan inkludere en radio og modem kombineret, knap så fleksibel (og koster mere!).

SSB (single sideband) radio blev oprindelig udviklet som en “lav energi” måde at sende tale på. Den præcise måde der kodes på er ganske urelavant i dette tilfælde.

Vi bruger det simpelt til at opfange et udsnit a frekvensen og flytte det til et spektrum lydkortet kan opfange.

How this works is that the transmitter broadcasts a '0' at 434.075MHz (for example) - the SSB radio is tuned to 434.074MHz (1000Hz lower). The SSB receiver outputs a tone that is simply the input frequency minus the tuning frequency.

1000Hz and 1200Hz are easily in the audible range (the receiver will only output from around 300-3000Hz) - and are passed to the soundcard.

The tones are then used by fldigi to decode the RTTY signal - which is basically just RS232 - old fashioned serial - at 50 bits a second. The two tones appear in the above 'waterfall' window of fldigi (see below) as two yellow bands (other signals are interference and noise) and are what the decoder lines should be centred over.

There is a 30-sec recording of live data mp3 version and wav version. These files are about 500kB.

Unless you are very close, you won't hear anything unless you have line of sight. This means that the balloon usually needs to be above your horizon.

Radio

  • Most balloon flights in the UK will use 434.075MHz as their main transmission frequency, however due to the cold temperatures the radio frequency often drifts so at some point you'll need to retune the receiver.
  • Set up the radio, turn it on, select USB (Upper side band) and tune to 434.075MHz. Once the balloon has been launched you'll need to listen for a bit to see if you can hear anything then tune up and down a bit (say down to 434.065MHz and up to 434.085MHz). If you are using a directional antenna (e.g. Yagi) you'll need to point this in roughly the correct direction. Moving the antenna position may also help - some buildings block the radio frequency.
  • You might still be out of range so if you don't hear anything check you've got the right settings and try again in 10 minutes. Pop on to #highaltitude to check that the launch has taken place and that others are getting the signal.
  • Once you start hearing the signal it's time to get decoding.

Computer

dl-fldigi

Translations

dl-fldigi is an adapted version of the excellent free FLdigi soundcard decoding software. It takes the audio from your radio, decodes the balloon's signal, and then sends the telemetry it's found over the internet to a server running habitat, which plots the payloads position on to the SpaceNear map.

  • First grab the latest version on the projects page: dl-fldigi
  • Open up dl-fldigi in hab mode (now the default mode for OSX). On first running it'll open up a wizard to help setup dl-fldigi for you.

  • This new version parses the data it receives and splits it up into the boxes and calculates the distance and bearing that the payload is from your base station (based on the latitude and longitude you previously input). You may need to resize the window width when you first open dl-fldigi to fit your screen.
  • First thing is to enter your location (this is required to appear on the map and to calculate distance, elevation and bearing (Please remember to put in your latitude and longitude in decimal format using + or - rather than NSEW e.g. 52.0000 -0.12345 You will also need to put in your altitude, you can put in 0 if you don't know this)

  • dl-fldigi if connected to the internet should automatically download a list of the possible payloads. To view them select the 'Flight' dropdown box.
  • Once you've selected your payload you need to click on the Autoconfigure button which will setup dl-fldigi for tracking.

  • Green means that the string passed its checksum test while red means it failed. Feedback from the server can be seen in the bottom status box.

  • dl-fldigi forwards the strings to the central server.

  • The server does further checks and then will post the points to the spacenear.us tracker
