Here's a good general list of kit to take with you when you launch.

Payload

  • The payload box
  • Radio tracker(s)
  • GSM/SPOT backup tracker if you're using one
  • Fresh Lithium Energizer Ultimate batteries for the tracker
  • Contact Labels/cards for inside and outside the payload box
  • Video / stills cameras

Flight Train

  • At least 2 metres of braided Nylon cord, no more than 2mm diameter
  • Parachute
  • Balloon
  • Good quality cable ties 5mm width at least 250mm long
  • Gaffer tape

Filling Kit

  • Ground sheet (tarpaulin)
  • Gas cylinder
  • Gas regulator/valve
  • Filling Tube
  • Kitchen Scales
  • Printed Neck Lift Calculation (see http://habhub.org/calc/)
  • Full bottle of water weighing at least as much as the “neck lift” figure in the above calculation
  • Scissors
  • Wire Cutters
  • Latex gloves

Tracking Kit

  • Laptop or netbook running dl-fldigi, or Android phone or tablet running https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brejza.matt.habmodem&hl=en_GB
  • SSB UHF radio or scanner with fresh batteries and audio cable, or SDR for laptop
  • Magmount 434MHz (70cm) aerial, with adapter if necessary to fit to aerial socket on radio
  • 3G dongle for laptop, or MiFi, or phone with wifi tethering
  • Car chargers or spare batteries for all electronics kit

Chase Kit

  • Phone or Pi or laptop with GPS to upload car position to map
  • Car Sat Nav or phone with mapping (preferably offline mapping)
  • Pen and paper
  • Small Yagi aerial
  • Knife
  • Telescopic pole with hook
  • Carrier bag to put the balloon remnants in

Miscellaneous

  • Printed copy of launch permission from the CAA
  • Food & Drink
  • Folding table to work on
  • Wellies / walking boots
  • Suitable clothing for the weather
  • Torch
