parawing

Parawing *TOP SECRET*

Hehe well its not top secret as you can see it in recent changes - oh well…

I'm just going to dump everything i can think of/remember:

Things that need to be done/overcome/worked out:

  • 2 way comms
  • kite dynamics, e.g. winds, angle of attach
  • deployment at altitude e.g. cutdown, drogue? predeployment? parachute for most of descent and then use parawing later?
  • pathfinding - ability to calculate best angle of attack into the wind, not risk parawing by going directly into the wind, find alternative landing sites?
  • kite shape - enchanced or not?
  • control, method of turning, servos + bar, motor + drive shaft + t bar, winch + bridle
  • flight computer - gumstix for gps, digital compass, complex pathfinding, comms + PIC for controlling motors/servos + sensors?
  • landing - autopilot? r/c guided?
  • future plans/roadmap

Specs:

  • 750g payload
  • therefore 1m2 parachute would be required
  • equivalent parawing?

- Feedback from MC: If you want to split up tasks, I could work on 2 way comms.

Parawing won't mind going into wind, IMHO

I think the Mk1 version could be steered from the ground, then Mk2 could be steered by software

It should be possible to have a much smaller payload, perhaps around the mass of a servo+batt+electronics, 200g?

ed: - Although reduced weight is a good thing in general, weight will help us control the wing. Also, when you factor in cameras and the actual mechanics, 750g seems like a more realistic target to me- we'll still have to be building light to get it in under that!
